Material
Dry Pastel
The material I work with in the course is Dry Pastel and Fixative.
These are crayons that are very easy to take with you and therefore make creation easy.
The material is both just over and very affordable.
There are very good crayons at a low price that are excellent and therefore you can let both several family members or friends sit and paint.
Dry pastel is excellent for painting on the substrate acrylic paints.
And, I myself combine these two materials in my own paintings.
I also show this in class.
These crayons are favorite material among my students at Kulturskolan, where I work as a part-time art teacher.
The result is always good.
It is easy to mix the colors together and create shades yourself.
A big advantage is also that it is easy to paint over what you are not happy with because the colors cover each other after fixing.
Even dark colors are easily covered with light colors.
By working with these crayons layer upon layer,
an incredibly wonderful depth is created and you get the same fine depth as in a painting with acrylic paints.
Unlike acrylic and watercolor,
which are mixed on a palette or in jars with each other to produce different shades before they are painted on paper or canvas, dry pastels are mixed with each other directly on the paper itself.
Soft pastel
is about the same kind of chalk.
The difference is that soft pastel is slightly softer, which gives the advantage that it goes into the paper very easily and is easy to work with and mix colors and create wonderful shades.
The disadvantage is that they break more easily against the dry pastel, which is also referred to by the word hard pastel.
Dry pastel crayons – fixative With these soft pastel crayons, you create beautiful works of art with soft luster.
Shimmer and shading are achieved with ease.
Choose color tones according to mood and favorite motifs.
You use fixatives to preserve your work and to erase or soften, I use my fingers to work the color into the paper.
It must be a matte paper or cardboard and special paper is available to buy if you want to spend a little extra money on getting a wonderful painting to hang on the wall.

More facts about Drypastell as you use in Painting course 3 lessons
Dry pastel, also known as dry pastel chalk or simply pastel, is an artistic medium used for drawing and painting. It is a type of pigment stick that consists of pigment, binder, and a minimal amount of water. The main difference between dry pastel and oil pastel lies in the binder – dry pastel uses a dry binder while oil pastel uses an oil-based binder.
Here are some key characteristics and uses of dry pastel:
Color saturation and brightness: Dry pastel chalk provides vibrant and intense colors. Its dry consistency allows for layering, giving the artist the ability to create depth and rich shades.
Surface texture: The material creates a unique and distinctive surface on paper or canvas. The grainy texture can be visually appealing and tactile, providing the artwork with a textured feel.
Blendability: Artists can blend colors by directly rubbing or blending dry pastel sticks on the surface. This allows for transitions and gradients in the artwork.
Size and format: Dry pastel is typically available as sticks or blocks in various sizes and shapes. They can be used in a versatile manner, from detailed lines to broad strokes of color.
Fixative: Since dry pastel is dry and powdery, it can be fragile and smudge easily. To protect and fix the artwork after completing the drawing or painting, a pastel fixative is used. This helps prevent the color from smudging or coming off the surface.
Paper: To achieve the best results with dry pastel, it’s important to use the right type of paper. Pastel paper has a special surface that helps grip and hold the pastel chalk, reducing the risk of smudging or fading.
Dry pastel is known for giving artists the opportunity to explore color and form in a profound way. It is often used for portraits, landscapes, still life, and abstract art. The medium requires practice and patience to master, but it can create impressive and vibrant artworks when used correctly.
